Why we love this

This book cuts through the noise of rehearsal by organizing warm-up systematically around the three foundations every section needs: intonation, key relationships, and rhythmic precision. Rather than fumbling through disconnected exercises, your students encounter a coherent progression that builds understanding and confidence from the first rehearsal. The inclusion of harmony and ear training pages grounds the exercises in actual music-making, not rote mechanics.

What to expect

Clear and purposeful. This book removes guesswork from warm-up by breaking every fundamental into digestible, logical steps. Students feel the direct connection between their preparation work and their ability to tackle ensemble repertoire with confidence.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophone players in beginning to intermediate concert bands who need structured daily reinforcement of fundamental technique and music literacy. Directors can assign this as essential preparation work for students who tend to show up unprepared or who need extra support building independent practice habits.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the tune-up section first in each rehearsal without stopping for corrections; let students experience a complete run before addressing specific intonation issues.
  • Rotate through the key preparation pages systematically across your rehearsal week so students encounter different tonal centers and gradually expand their harmonic vocabulary.
  • Use the rhythm preparation exercises at a steady, comfortable tempo initially, then gradually increase speed only after accuracy is secure.
  • Reference the harmony and ear training pages when students struggle with blend or intonation on a particular piece; the foundational work here clarifies why certain adjustments matter.

How to use it

Make this a standing first ten minutes of every rehearsal throughout the year. You might assign specific sections for homework based on what your ensemble struggles with that week, then confirm understanding during the next rehearsal. As a supplementary resource, it pairs seamlessly with your core method book and lets you address common intonation and rhythm issues without derailing repertoire rehearsal.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone production and intonation control across the instrument's range
  • Harmonic relationships and how to hear interval accuracy
  • Sight-reading rhythm patterns in varied meters and subdivisions
  • Key signature familiarity and major/minor tonal centers
  • Melodic phrase phrasing and breath management
  • Ear training for chord identification and harmonic function
