Why we love this

This book systematizes the often-chaotic first ten minutes of rehearsal into a focused, three-part sequence that actually works. Bassoonists get targeted warm-ups, key-specific preparation, and rhythm drills designed to build the rhythmic security and intonation stability the section needs, all without turning warm-up time into wasted energy.

What to expect

Organized and purposeful. Each page builds systematically from foundational warm-up into more demanding technical work, creating a sense of progress and mastery by the end of a session. The three-dimensional structure gives students clarity about why they are doing each exercise.

Who it's for

Bassoonists in concert band programs from middle school through high school who need a structured daily warm-up routine that addresses both individual technique and ensemble preparation. This is ideal for directors seeking a comprehensive approach that eliminates guesswork and keeps rehearsal time productive.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the tune-up section daily to establish consistent embouchure response and articulation across the entire section before moving to repertoire work.
  • Use the key preparation exercises in the order they appear; each builds on intonation concepts from the previous one, creating cumulative understanding rather than isolated drills.
  • Apply the rhythm preparation patterns directly to passages in your current repertoire to show students how these exercises solve real problems in the music they're learning.
  • Reserve the harmony and ear training pages for early rehearsals when attention is freshest; these lay foundation for blend and tuning work that follows.

How to use it

Assign specific sections of the book to rehearsal dates throughout the semester so every student completes it methodically. The tune-up and key preparation work best at the start of rehearsal before tackling new literature, while rhythm and harmony exercises can anchor a mid-week sectional focused on intonation and rhythmic precision.

Skills your students will build

  • Consistent tone production across the full range
  • Intonation control in multiple keys
  • Rhythmic accuracy and independence
  • Harmonic listening and blend
  • Articulation clarity and consistency
  • Understanding interval relationships through ear training
