Why we love this

This book transforms the early minutes of rehearsal into structured, purposeful preparation rather than aimless noodling. The three-part framework (tune up, key preparation, rhythm preparation) plus dedicated harmony and ear training gives oboists concrete tools for getting centered before tackling new repertoire, which means your full ensemble can dive into the music with better intonation, rhythmic confidence, and focus.

What to expect

This is preparation that builds confidence. The progression from general tuning and tone work through key-specific drills and rhythmic patterns creates a sense of readiness, turning the oboe section into the reliable, well-prepared voice the band depends on.

Who it's for

Oboists in beginning to intermediate concert bands who need systematic preparation for rehearsals and a structured warm-up routine. This book works equally well for students warming up at home before rehearsal and for directors who want to standardize how their oboe section enters each rehearsal focused and ready.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the tune up section first, using it as your daily baseline for intonation and embouchure consistency before moving to key-specific material.
  • Return to the harmony and ear training pages periodically throughout the year rather than treating them as one-time exercises; they build cumulative listening skills that improve sight-reading and blend.
  • Use the key preparation drills in the week before rehearsing band repertoire in that key, so oboists arrive already familiar with the technical landscape.
  • Pair the rhythm preparation section with your band's current repertoire by extracting rhythmic patterns from upcoming charts and reinforcing them here first.

How to use it

Use this as your oboe section's standard warm-up resource, assigned nightly for home practice and reviewed in section rehearsals before full ensemble work. The three-part structure means you can target different areas depending on what's coming up in the weekly repertoire—focus on key preparation the week you're tackling a new piece in a challenging key.

Skills your students will build

  • Systematic embouchure and tone control through progressive tuning exercises
  • Technical facility and accuracy across multiple key signatures
  • Rhythmic precision and counting accuracy in varied meters
  • Interval recognition and harmonic listening through dedicated ear training
  • Sight-reading fluency through consistent, daily melodic and rhythmic reading
