About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has established himself as a prolific figure in music education, with over 800 published works to his name. He developed the Contemporary Band Course, now distributed through Alfred Music and adopted in schools across multiple countries, including Norway where it has been translated into the local language. His compositional training came from study under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University-Long Beach, and his orchestration expertise was deepened through collaboration with members of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Beyond composition, Ployhar spent more than 19 years in public school teaching and has maintained an active presence as a clinician and conductor at colleges and universities throughout North America and Europe. His contributions to band music earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and he holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association. His work has been performed internationally and broadcast on network television.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the guesswork of band warm-up by organizing preparation into three focused areas: tuning and flexibility, key-specific drills, and rhythmic precision. The addition of harmony and ear training pages gives students context for understanding how the exercises connect to actual music, rather than treating warm-ups as disconnected technical work. Directors report that a structured, three-part system like this reduces wasted rehearsal time and lets the ensemble settle into musical work faster.

What to expect

The book feels like a systematic handshake with fundamentals. Each section builds logically from general flexibility to specific tonality work, giving players a sense of progress within the warm-up itself rather than just checking boxes.

Who it's for

Bass clarinet players in concert band programs at the middle and high school levels benefit most from this book. It works equally well for directors building a warm-up routine from scratch and for those looking to replace an unfocused or disorganized opening to rehearsal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the order of exercises in the first rehearsal so players know what to expect; consistency allows them to focus on sound quality rather than logistics.
  • Use the key preparation section strategically by previewing upcoming repertoire keys before introducing new pieces.
  • Rotate through the rhythm preparation pages across the week rather than repeating the same exercises daily; variety maintains engagement and prevents mechanical playing.
  • Reference the harmony and ear training pages when students struggle with intonation problems tied to chord function, not just pitch matching.

How to use it

Open rehearsals with this book for 8 to 12 minutes, cycling through its three parts across the week so that by week's end, the ensemble has reinforced tuning, tonality, and rhythmic precision as a unified group. The structured format also makes it valuable for student-led sectionals or home practice assignments where bass clarinetists need independent reinforcement of core skills.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and breath support across the bass clarinet's range
  • Intonation matching and adjustment within chord contexts
  • Rhythmic accuracy in simple and syncopated patterns
  • Key signature recognition and tonal center awareness
  • Harmonic listening and interval identification
