About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has served as Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University, a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, and earned her California Single Subject Music Credential from California State University, Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings deep pedagogical insight to her arranging work. Beyond her musical life as composer, educator, and conductor, she is an active traveler, swimmer, and cyclist.

Why we love this

Gray draws from authentic Irish blessings rather than inventing sentiment, which gives this arrangement genuine emotional weight without oversweetening the moment. The subtle Celtic rhythmic texture lifts what could be a simple farewell into something memorable, making it equally effective for high school graduations or community choir concerts where you need a piece that feels both timely and timeless.

What to expect

Warm and reflective, with the kind of unrushed dignity that comes from blessing language rather than sentimental melody. The hint of Celtic character gives it texture and specificity without overwhelming the piece's fundamental intimacy.

Who it's for

Any choir looking for a thoughtful graduation or farewell piece that works for ensembles with mixed ability levels. The accessibility and emotional resonance make it ideal for high school and community choirs, though the authentic Irish text and gentle arrangement appeal across age groups.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the Celtic groove breathe naturally rather than driving it rhythmically; the gentleness of the text benefits from a relaxed, conversational pulse.
  • Balance the harmonic layers so that the blessing text remains the focal point; individual voice parts should support without competing.
  • Consider the recorded accompaniment as a rehearsal tool first, then decide whether it enhances or diminishes the intimacy you want in performance.

How to use it

Reserve this for a program closing or as the final piece in a graduation concert, where its contemplative tone and message of connection create a natural emotional endpoint. It also works beautifully in a themed program exploring global musical traditions or blessing texts across cultures.

Skills your students will build

  • Shaping text-driven phrases with clear breath points
  • Blending harmonic extensions and suspended sonorities characteristic of modal writing
  • Maintaining steady, relaxed tempo while navigating gentle rhythmic motion
  • Balancing four-part SATB texture to prioritize lyrical content over part independence
