More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, with teaching credentials from California State University, Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings both classroom experience and compositional sophistication to her work. Beyond her roles as composer, director, and performer, she pursues travel, swimming, reading, and cycling.

Why we love this

Gray understands exactly what a graduating choir needs to sing: music that feels both dignified and genuinely singable, with text that captures the bittersweet emotion of saying goodbye. The recorded accompaniment removes the burden of finding a pianist for your graduation ceremony, letting you focus entirely on the choir's sound during rehearsals and performance.

What to expect

A reflective farewell that honors both joy and melancholy, balancing hope with the weight of transition. The traditional harmonic language feels warm and accessible, making the emotional content feel earned rather than forced.

Who it's for

Any choir performing at a graduation ceremony, from high school ensembles to college groups and community choirs. The piece works equally well for groups with limited rehearsal time or those preparing a more polished program.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody clearly without letting supporting voices fade into accompaniment; this text deserves to be heard with full resonance from every section.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in early rehearsals to establish tempo and harmonic grounding, then gradually reduce your reliance on it to build ensemble independence.
  • Pay attention to phrase length and breathing; mark your cuts strategically to avoid gasping mid-thought during emotional peaks.
  • Record a rehearsal run-through with the accompaniment and listen for moments where the choir pulls ahead or lags behind; this builds awareness that transfers directly to performance.

How to use it

Close your graduation ceremony with this piece as a reflective finale that lets families and students sit with the moment rather than celebrate it away. Alternatively, feature it earlier in your program as an emotional anchor that sets the tone for the entire event.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained phrases while maintaining musical shape and lyrical clarity
  • Balancing individual voice parts within a harmonic texture
  • Performing with emotional restraint and dignity
  • Following a recorded accompaniment with rhythmic precision and flexibility
