About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, along with her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray has established herself as a prolific voice in choral arranging and original composition. Beyond her work in the classroom and at the publishing desk, she is an active performer and brings her wide musical background to everything she creates for singers.

Why we love this

Gray's arrangement weaves multiple Irish blessings into a unified whole without feeling patchwork or overstuffed. The gentle Celtic groove gives the piece warmth and forward motion, making it genuinely singable rather than solemn, and the SSA voicing sits comfortably for mixed-age choirs while sounding full and rich.

What to expect

The piece carries warmth and hope rather than melancholy. The Celtic groove gives it a lightness that keeps the goodbye sentiment from feeling heavy, while the traditional blessings ground it in something timeless and spiritual.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for high school, middle school, and adult choirs seeking a meaningful farewell piece. It appeals equally to singers with minimal experience and those with stronger musicianship because the writing is singable across ability levels.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the Celtic character by keeping the rhythm lilting and slightly relaxed rather than metronomic; let the groove breathe naturally.
  • Balance the parts so text from each blessing emerges clearly when it arrives; blend when all voices sing together.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to help the choir lock onto the groove and internalize the Celtic feel before performing live.

How to use it

Perfect as a processional or final song at graduation or end-of-year concerts. It also serves well as a concert closer when you want to send the audience out with something gentle and reflective rather than triumphant.

Skills your students will build

  • Blend and balance in three-part writing
  • Rhythmic flexibility and feel for a Celtic groove
