Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

Why we love this

The modular suite structure gives you real flexibility in performance planning. You can program individual carols for a winter concert, string together a medley for something more substantial, or pull single movements from the Nutcracker suite depending on what fits your rehearsal calendar and ensemble size.

What to expect

Joyful and accessible. The arrangements sit comfortably in the trumpet's range and honor the melodies students already know from carols, while the orchestrated accompaniment creates a celebratory concert-hall sound that makes intermediate players feel like they're part of something bigger.

Who it's for

Trumpet students in their second and third years of playing who are ready to perform recognizable holiday material with harmonic support. This collection works equally well for festival repertoire, winter concerts, or building confidence with backed-up solo performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Separate the movements within each suite and assign them to different students or sections if you want multiple trumpets performing. Since each movement sits on its own page with its own backing track, this approach works seamlessly for mixed-level groups.
  • Use the demo tracks first to establish what the arrangement should sound like, then move to the play-along to build confidence. The orchestrated context helps students hear their part within a fuller harmonic picture.
  • In the Nutcracker movements, watch the tempo and character shifts between "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March." These are distinct pieces with different energy, so mark your practice sessions accordingly.

How to use it

Scatter these solos across your winter concert to break up ensemble pieces, or dedicate a short segment to a medley that showcases your strongest second and third year students. The shorter individual carols work beautifully for holiday caroling events where you want prepared, polished repertoire that audiences recognize immediately.

Skills your students will build

  • Melodic phrasing over harmonic accompaniment
  • Tempo consistency against a backing track
  • Stylistic differentiation between sacred and secular carols
  • Transitions between connected movements in suite form
  • Reading single-page, self-contained arrangements
