Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

Why we love this

The flexibility here is genuinely useful. Each movement of every suite fits on a single page with its own accompaniment track, so you can program "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" standalone or build it into a larger Nutcracker showcase depending on your concert needs. The medley structures give you natural ways to create variety without hunting for additional arrangements.

What to expect

Warm and approachable. These arrangements honor the emotional core of familiar carols without overwhelming the soloist; you get the satisfaction of playing real holiday music that audiences recognize and love, with orchestration that feels fuller than what a young player could achieve alone.

Who it's for

Alto saxophonists at grades 2 and 3 who are ready for holiday performance but still building facility. This works equally well for solo recitals, small ensembles featuring one saxophonist, or full concert settings where an alto sax takes the featured line.

How to get the most out of it

  • Reference the demo track first to hear how the solo line sits in the orchestration, then isolate the play-along version to build confidence with the accompaniment.
  • Balance the tessitura of each arrangement with your soloist's most secure register; these are edited for the range of developing players, but individual comfort matters.
  • Treat the medleys as opportunities for strategic breathing and phrasing between movements rather than rushing through transitions; let each carol breathe.

How to use it

Load this into your December concert as your go-to source for featured solos, or assign individual tracks as practice assignments that students complete outside of ensemble rehearsal. The medley structures let you custom-build a section tailored to your concert length and instrumentation.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing solo lines against full orchestral accompaniment
  • Intonation stability in varied harmonic contexts
  • Phrasing and breathing in lyrical, sustained passages
  • Navigating key changes across medley movements
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity with recorded accompaniment
