Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The recording includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

About the Creator: Alfred Music

Alfred Music has spent decades building the instrumental method and repertoire library that band and orchestra directors rely on. Their publications balance accessibility with musical substance, ensuring that arrangements serve both the learning goals of developing musicians and the artistic integrity of the pieces themselves.

Why we love this

The flexibility here is what sets this collection apart. Each suite movement fits on its own page with a dedicated track, so you can program individual selections in a winter concert, string them together for a medley performance, or pull out just the pieces your students are ready for. The demo-plus-play-along format means students hear exactly how the solo line should sit in the arrangement before they dive in.

What to expect

Warm, accessible, and celebratory. These arrangements honor the traditional character of Christmas carols while keeping the trombone writing singable and supportive of student confidence. The orchestrated accompaniment creates a full, festive context that makes even young players feel like they're performing at a genuine concert level.

Who it's for

Intermediate trombone students (grades 2-3) ready for solo performance but still building technical security. This book works equally well for students preparing their first solo recital or for band directors seeking varied Christmas concert material that doesn't require extensive rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Isolate the medley sections in rehearsal by working through one movement at a time, then gradually connect them to build stamina and maintain musical cohesion across tempo or style shifts.
  • Use the demo tracks as a listening model before introducing the play-along; students will absorb phrasing, articulation, and balance more quickly when they hear a complete performance first.
  • Pay attention to the written articulation in carols like 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing'—these familiar melodies benefit from crisp, clean tonguing that honors the hymn style while keeping energy forward.

How to use it

Slot individual selections into a winter concert as short, high-impact solos between larger ensemble pieces; the familiar melodies guarantee audience connection. For a dedicated winter recital or holiday showcase, string the medleys together as a thematic program that showcases different moods—celebration, reverence, caroling joy—without demanding advanced repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Connecting solo melody to an orchestrated ensemble sound
  • Legato phrasing and breath management in hymn-style arrangements
  • Sustaining pitch and tone over longer melodic lines
  • Interpreting traditional carols with tasteful expression
  • Sight-reading modular suite structures (playing individual movements or combining them)
