Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

Why we love this

Horn players finally get a dedicated Christmas collection designed specifically for their instrument and voice. The medley and suite format gives you genuine flexibility: teach the pieces as larger works or pull individual movements for shorter performance slots, and every option is tracked separately on the recording.

What to expect

Warm and festive without being saccharine. The arrangements honor the character of each carol: the triumphant energy of "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World" contrasts with the gentle reverence of "Silent Night," while contemporary pieces like "Believe" add modern flavor to the traditional mix.

Who it's for

Horn players in grades 2 and 3 who want accessible Christmas repertoire that doesn't sound simplified. Whether you're building a seasonal solo recital, contributing to a holiday concert, or caroling as an ensemble, these pieces sit well on the instrument and stay musically satisfying.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the demo track first to hear how each piece should sit stylistically, then switch to the play-along version for practice. This two-step approach helps students absorb phrasing before they focus on ensemble blend.
  • When performing the suites, decide in rehearsal whether you'll play all movements consecutively or select specific sections. Marking your page turns clearly prevents stumbles between movements.
  • Use the Tempo Changer Software to slow down faster carols like "A Holly Jolly Christmas" during early rehearsals, then gradually restore performance tempo as intonation and fingering security improve.
  • Balance the lyrical lines in "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night" by supporting longer phrases with steady air; these arrangements reward legit tone production.

How to use it

Slot these into December concerts as solo features or small ensemble numbers alongside choral groups. The medleys work especially well as warm-up or transition pieces between major works, and individual movements from the suites can fill specific concert segments without requiring a full suite performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing and shaping in moderate-tempo lyrical lines
  • Rhythmic accuracy in syncopated secular carols
  • Intonation in sustained sacred passages
  • Dynamic control across a range of articulations
  • Ensemble listening when playing with accompaniment
  • Quick page navigation and movement transitions in multi-section pieces
