Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

Why we love this

This collection bridges the gap between holiday season programming needs and what intermediate players can actually handle. The medley and suite format lets you program a three-minute set from one book, or extract individual pieces for variety, giving you real flexibility when every rehearsal slot counts in December. The demo-then-play-along structure means your students hear exactly how their part fits into full orchestration before they perform it.

What to expect

Warmth and familiarity wrapped in fresh arrangements. These carols sound complete and orchestrated, not simplified, so players feel like they're part of something bigger despite playing at an intermediate level. The mix of upbeat secular pieces alongside sacred standards creates a natural ebb and flow.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophonists at the early-intermediate stage who need accessible holiday repertoire that stays engaging across a full rehearsal season. This book works equally well for solo recital preparation, ensemble participation, or casual caroling in the community.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen through the demo track once before rehearsal so you can identify which passages need sectional work and which ones your students can absorb quickly.
  • When working on the medleys and suites, isolate each movement on its own track to build comfort with transitions before running them consecutively.
  • Use the Tempo Changer Software to gradually increase playback speed once your students know their parts, reinforcing rhythmic accuracy without sacrificing musicality.
  • Refer to the printed piano accompaniment to understand harmonic support in any passage where the rhythm section drives the pulse.

How to use it

Build your holiday concert around the three medleys as anchor pieces, then supplement with individual selections that showcase different moods. The suites are especially useful for school assemblies or outdoor performances where you want a unified musical statement but need the flexibility to adjust length on the fly.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing solo articulation within a full orchestral texture
  • Quick adaptation to varied melodic styles within a single medley or suite
  • Reading and executing page turns that align with track breaks
  • Sustaining musical intention across movement changes in larger forms
  • Intonation consistency when switching between demo and play-along tracks
