Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

About the Creator: Alfred Music

Alfred Music has been a cornerstone of music education for over a century, building its reputation on carefully graded materials that respect both student development and musical integrity. Their editorial team works directly with teachers and performers to ensure arrangements speak authentically to young musicians while remaining playable and engaging at their respective levels.

Why we love this

The medley and suite format gives you real flexibility in programming. You can perform complete multi-movement pieces for impact, extract individual carols for shorter slots, or mix and match selections across multiple concerts without feeling repetitive. The dual-track recording model (demo followed by play-along) makes it equally useful for independent practice, small group rehearsal, or supplementing a larger ensemble context.

What to expect

Familiar melodies emerge with warmth and dignity, supported by lush orchestral textures that make a young clarinetist feel heard and valued. The arrangements respect both the instrument and the holiday spirit, never overshadowing the soloist while keeping the music engaging for performers and audiences alike.

Who it's for

Clarinet students in grades 2 and 3 who are ready to perform with fuller instrumentation but still building technical confidence. This collection works for solo recitals, ensemble workshops, or holiday concert contributions where individual student solos need reliable, age-appropriate material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the demo track to hear the intended phrasing and articulation before rehearsing the play-along. Pay attention to how the solo voice balances with the orchestration.
  • Anchor your entrances with the accompaniment by listening closely to the harmonic movement, especially in medley transitions where multiple themes connect.
  • When performing a suite movement on its own, confirm you have the complete ending; some movements are designed to connect to the next, so you may need to adjust the final cadence if playing standalone.
  • Experiment with the Tempo Changer Software to slow tricky passages for practice without losing the feel of the orchestrated accompaniment.

How to use it

Pull individual carols for a holiday pops concert where each band or ensemble student performs one featured solo over a shared accompaniment. Alternatively, assign the thematic suites to advanced 2-3 students as a multi-movement recital project that demonstrates musicianship across different styles within a single piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with recorded accompaniment and maintaining ensemble time
  • Phrasing and expression in familiar, lyrical melodies
  • Interpreting articulation in sacred and secular contexts
  • Navigating medley and suite structures with clear sectional divisions
  • Adapting tempo and dynamics to match orchestrated backgrounds
