More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped instrumental music education through more than 800 published works and the development of the Contemporary Band Course, now distributed by Alfred Music. His credentials span performance, composition, and pedagogy; he studied orchestration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic and composition at California State University-Long Beach, bringing European musical perspectives into his educational materials. Over 19 years in public school classrooms informed his approach to sequence and student engagement.

Plyohar's influence extends far beyond the United States. The Contemporary Band Course has been translated into French and Norwegian and is widely adopted throughout Scandinavia. His work as a clinician and conductor has taken him throughout North America and Europe, and his compositions have been broadcast on network television and performed internationally. He received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University, recognizing his sustained contributions to band music and music education.

Why we love this

Ployhar designed Technic Today as a direct pedagogical partner to Band Today, Part Three, so the exercises reinforce exactly what students are learning in repertoire rather than existing as separate drill work. The carefully scaffolded progression means E-flat alto clarinet players develop control over the idiosyncrasies of their instrument without feeling like they're working through generic exercises. For a section that often struggles with intonation and voicing blending, having focused technical studies builds confidence and precision alongside their concert music preparation.

What to expect

Focused and purposeful. These exercises strip away melody and harmony to isolate the mechanical work your hands, fingers, and air support need to do. You'll find yourself concentrating on articulation clarity, interval accuracy, and the subtle balance required on an instrument that can easily go sharp or slip under the pitch.

Who it's for

E-flat alto clarinet players in advanced-intermediate concert bands who are working through Band Today, Part Three or any comparable method. This book serves students ready to move beyond fundamental exercises into more sophisticated technical development without abandoning the structure that made early method books useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the exercises in order during the first week of rehearsal; they're sequenced to build on each other, so skipping ahead leaves gaps in facility.
  • Assign specific studies as homework tied to the passages students find challenging in their current concert piece.
  • Use these materials in sectional rehearsals so the E-flat clarinet players receive focused attention without slowing down the full band.
  • Have students play through a study twice in succession to develop endurance; the second pass reveals which technical elements still need work.

How to use it

Integrate these studies into sectional rehearsals during the same unit when you're performing the corresponding material from Band Today, Part Three. If your program doesn't use the Band Today series, this book aligns naturally with advanced-intermediate repertoire, making it a practical supplement when your E-flat clarinet section needs targeted technical reinforcement alongside concert preparation.

Skills your students will build

  • Scale passages and interval jumps on E-flat clarinet
  • Articulation control and clarity across registers
  • Intonation accuracy and pitch stability
  • Technical fluency in keys used in advanced-intermediate repertoire
  • Finger dexterity and coordination for running passages
