More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar stands as a cornerstone figure in band music education, with more than 800 published compositions spanning pedagogical and concert repertoire. His Contemporary Band Course, now distributed by Alfred Music, has become a global standard; the method has been translated into French and Norwegian and remains central to music programs throughout Scandinavia and beyond. Ployhar's compositional voice draws from deep orchestration study with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic, and his works have reached audiences through network television broadcasts and international performances across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim.

Beyond composition, Ployhar has shaped music education through two decades of classroom teaching and countless clinics at the collegiate level. He earned his BS from Valley City State University, his MA from the University of Northern Colorado, and studied composition under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University-Long Beach. His contributions have earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and he remains a respected member of the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

This book bridges the gap between method learning and performance-ready technique in a format designed specifically for mallet percussion students who often receive less focused technical material than pitched instruments. Ployhar's pedagogical clarity means every exercise reinforces patterns and habits that transfer directly to repertoire, making rehearsal time efficient and outcomes measurable. The 24-page format respects the mallet percussion section's needs without overwhelming a part that doesn't require the same volume of exercises as woodwinds or brass.

What to expect

Purposeful and direct. These exercises cut through to what matters: clean strikes, controlled rebound, and the muscular memory needed for confident performance. Each exercise builds logically on the previous one, creating a sense of steady progress rather than scattered drills.

Who it's for

Mallet percussionists in advanced-intermediate concert bands who have completed Band Today, Part Three and need systematic reinforcement of their technical foundation. This book also serves as a practical supplement for any band director seeking organized, composer-approved exercises that align with the Contemporary Band Course philosophy.

How to get the most out of it

  • Coordinate mallet grip exercises with the rest of the band's warm-up routine so percussion students build technique alongside ensemble fundamentals rather than in isolation.
  • Work through exercises at a steady tempo before increasing speed; mallet control improves through clarity of motion, not rushing through passages.
  • Connect bell exercises to actual concert repertoire by identifying which technical patterns appear in the pieces you're preparing.
  • Have students practice with focused listening to their own tone quality and attack consistency, which these exercises are designed to refine.

How to use it

Assign these exercises as part of your regular band warm-up cycle, rotating through a few pages each week so mallet students develop technique without pulling them away from ensemble work. Use specific exercises as remedial focus when you notice control issues in rehearsal, or assign them as summer preparation for students entering the next level.

Skills your students will build

  • Mallet grip and hand position control
  • Articulation clarity and attack consistency
  • Dynamic control and tone quality on bells
  • Reading and executing rhythmic patterns specific to mallet percussion
  • Rebound management for single and multiple strikes
