Why we love this

Rollin builds on the proven success of her duet series by offering early intermediate pianists their own collection of rhythmically engaging, culturally diverse pieces. These solos maintain the infectious energy and accessibility that made Dances for Two popular while providing each student with their own spotlight, making them ideal for recitals, festivals, and building confidence in younger players.

What to expect

A musical passport to dance floors around the world, from Cuban rumba and tango salons to jazz-inflected rock and roll and the percussive excitement of tap time. Each piece captures the heartbeat and character of its dance tradition, inviting pianists to move with the music rather than simply perform it.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready to explore world music styles and develop comfort with dance rhythms and syncopation. These pieces work equally well for students preparing for festivals, recitals, or simply expanding their repertoire with music that feels relevant and fun to play.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the character of each dance style; a Cha-Cha demands crisp articulation and rhythmic precision, while the Tango calls for smoother phrasing and dramatic timing shifts.
  • Practice the rhythmic patterns separately before combining them with melody; many pieces in this collection use syncopation and cross-rhythms that benefit from isolation and gradual integration.
  • Record yourself and listen back to check tempo consistency, especially in pieces where the rhythmic foundation drives the entire texture.
  • Use the varied tempos across the collection to explore different moods; the slow dance pieces offer a chance to work on legato and pedal control before returning to the faster, more percussive numbers.

How to use it

Feature one or more selections on a recital or festival program to showcase students' rhythmic maturity and cultural awareness. The collection's variety makes it simple to pair contrasting pieces on the same program; a fiery Salsa followed by a gentler Mediterranean Dance or the lyrical Mazurka for Chopin creates compelling program flow.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing syncopated rhythms and cross-rhythms with accuracy
  • Recognizing and performing dance styles from multiple musical traditions
  • Managing tempo consistency and rhythmic vitality across different pieces
  • Using pedal effectively to enhance legato in slower dance pieces
  • Developing musical character and interpretation within structured forms
