About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin pairs an active composing practice with mentoring, having led masterclasses and workshops across the United States, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan. She holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree with distinction from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music degree from Oakland University School of Performing Arts.
Rollin's compositions have earned commissions from Clavier Companion, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Michigan Music Teachers Association, with multiple works selected for the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin. She has judged the MTNA Student Composition Competition at the national level and served on the panel for the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. Her ASCAP award-winning Museum Masterpieces series (Books 1-4) and her commissioned trio Suite Detroit (premiered at the 2018 MTNA national conference) demonstrate her range across educational and concert repertoire.
Why we love this
Rollin's dance-based collections strike that rare balance between genuine musicality and genuine fun. This solo book gives early intermediate pianists real rhythmic patterns to sink their teeth into, whether they're learning the swagger of a tango or the bounce of cha-cha, without sacrificing melodic interest or harmonic depth. The Federation Festivals selection confirms what teachers already know: these pieces are both rewarding to play and worthy of serious practice.
What to expect
A global tour through dance halls and festivals. Each piece carries its own flavor, from the Latin warmth of the rumba and tango to the playful charm of a gigue reimagined for the piano. The collection pulses with rhythm without ever feeling mechanical; these are dances meant to be felt as much as counted.
Who it's for
Early intermediate pianists hungry for repertoire that sounds stylish and feels modern. Students often tire of scale studies and generic etudes; these dances offer immediate musical gratification while building genuine technique. Teachers will find pieces that engage students' ears while they're building rhythmic precision and hand coordination.
How to get the most out of it
- Establish the rhythmic character of each dance before perfecting tempo. Work slowly through the syncopation in pieces like Island Rumba and Spicy Salsa to feel where the accent naturally falls, then gradually bring the tempo up.
- Pay attention to articulation as a coloring tool. Staccato notes in The Jester's Gigue and legato phrasing in Tantalizing Tango shape the identity of each dance; don't treat them as technical instructions alone.
- Use the left hand to anchor the groove. In rock and roll and conga-based pieces, the bass line isn't accompaniment; it's the heartbeat. Lock it in first, then layer the melody on top.
How to use it
Build a recital around the variety within this collection, programming two or three contrasting dances to showcase rhythmic range and cultural flavor. The lighter pieces (Conga, Conga, Conga and Tap Time Encore) pair well as encores or transitions between heavier repertoire. Festival competition programming benefits from the Federation Festivals 2024-2028 selection, and the tango or salsa pieces serve as strong standalone audition selections.
