More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray directs the choir program at Rosemead High School in California, where she has shaped young musicians since 2004. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University, a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, and earned her California Single Subject Music Credential at Cal State Northridge. Her compositional output spans over 100 published choral works.

Beyond the classroom and rehearsal hall, Gray remains active as a performer and continues to develop her craft through composition. She balances her musical life with travel, reading, swimming, and cycling adventures with her husband Douglas.

Why we love this

Gray's setting captures the emotional weight of a text that clearly matters, grounding it in melody and harmony that feels earned rather than decorative. A composer with this level of publication experience and classroom perspective knows exactly how to build accessibility without sacrificing artistic integrity, making this a piece that rehearses cleanly and performs with genuine impact.

What to expect

The piece carries a reflective, introspective quality that draws the listener inward. There's a sense of quiet reverence in the writing, inviting singers and audience alike into a moment of genuine feeling rather than spectacle.

Who it's for

Choirs at the high school level and above looking for secular repertoire with substance and emotional depth. This piece suits both concert and festival programming, rewarding careful preparation with a performance that lands meaningfully.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the literary quality of the text by shaping phrases around natural word stress and meaning rather than strictly metric divisions.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish the harmonic foundation during early rehearsals, then gradually shift toward independent singing.
  • Balance blend and tuning in passages where voices move in similar motion; the emotional core depends on clarity within unity.

How to use it

Place this in the heart of a concert program where you want to shift the room's energy and attention. Its contemplative character pairs well before or after more rhythmically active selections, anchoring a set around themes of memory or reflection.

Skills your students will build

  • Expressive phrasing tied to text-based storytelling
  • Part independence within accessible harmonic textures
  • Dynamic shape and control across longer sustained lines
