About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and studied English and French at the University of Nevada, Reno. While still an undergraduate, she founded two children's choruses, which sparked her passion for music education. She returned to school to earn certification in music teaching and completed a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she focused on integrating the arts across the curriculum.

Donnelly spent three decades teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, retiring as an active classroom educator. In 1985, she began a prolific collaboration with composer and arranger George Strid when their principal challenged them to write a musical for Reading Week. That partnership has produced over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. She remains active in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP, and continues to live in Reno with her husband Rich.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid have a gift for writing choral material that feels fresh and energizing without sacrificing musicality. The multiple voicing options here mean you're not locked into one configuration; SSA groups can perform it as written, and SSAA groups have flexibility too. Gospel-rock sits naturally with singers of all experience levels, and this piece carries genuine momentum that makes rehearsals feel purposeful.

What to expect

Warm, driving, and celebratory. The gospel-rock energy pulls singers forward, and the original melody feels instantly singable. There's an optimism in the piece that lifts the room; this is music that makes singers want to come to rehearsal.

Who it's for

SSA choirs of all ages and experience levels, from middle school through community ensembles. The upbeat gospel-rock style engages singers who might feel disconnected from more formal choral traditions, while the solid harmonic writing keeps experienced choirs satisfied.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the gospel feel by encouraging singers to find the rhythmic pocket. This isn't classical legit singing; it's grounded and conversational.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish the groove early in rehearsals, then work on independence once the harmonic foundation is secure.
  • Attend to the sectional balance in the SSA voicings. Gospel harmony can blur if the soprano and alto lines aren't equally present; mark dynamics clearly and check blend during run-throughs.
  • Let the text drive the energy. This piece lives in its rhythmic vitality, so articulation and phrasing should feel natural rather than metrically rigid.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a winter concert opener or a feel-good closer that sends the audience out smiling. It also pairs well alongside other seasonal or sacred repertoire if you're building a themed program. The recorded accompaniment option makes it accessible for schools with limited accompaniment resources.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel-rock phrasing and articulation
  • Harmonic awareness in SSA voicings
  • Rhythmic independence from accompaniment
  • Stylistic authenticity in popular sacred music
