About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. As Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, he brings decades of practical choral leadership to his creative work.

Moore has published over 500 compositions across sacred, secular, educational, and pop choral repertoire through major publishers including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Heritage Music Press. His works appear regularly at state contests and festivals, and he has received seventeen ASCAP Composers Standard Awards. The American Choral Directors Association recognized him as one of 400 elite composers of significance in American choral music history.

Why we love this

Moore's gospel sensibility shines through in this arrangement, which combines authentic spiritual roots with contemporary energy and swagger. The SAB voicing sits comfortably across mixed voices while the SoundPax parts and professional accompaniment track mean your choir sounds full and polished from the first rehearsal, not weeks down the line.

What to expect

Funky, propulsive, and built on the infectious momentum of a spiritual set to a contemporary groove. The arrangement captures the joy and forward motion of "all aboard," with the kind of rhythmic vitality that makes audiences want to move along with your singers.

Who it's for

This piece works for mixed choirs of all experience levels that want to tackle gospel material with authentic character and modern accessibility. Whether your singers have sung spirituals before or are exploring the genre for the first time, the energetic arrangement and strong accompaniment support keep everyone engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic pocket created by the accompaniment track; let the groove anchor your ensemble's phrasing rather than conducting strictly on the beat.
  • Bring clarity to the text by exaggerating consonants on "ticket" and the repeated "aboard" phrases; gospel style depends on crisp articulation.
  • Balance the three parts carefully during sectional rehearsals so the arrangement's funky foundation stays visible even when all voices sing together.
  • Use the optional instrumental parts to strengthen rhythmic confidence in early rehearsals; they provide a harmonic reference that helps singers lock into the arrangement's syncopation.

How to use it

Program this as an attention-grabbing moment in a concert of sacred or spiritually themed music; its contemporary energy provides excellent contrast to traditional hymns or classical sacred works. It also serves as a natural opener or closer for holiday concerts, given the celebratory traveling metaphor.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel-style rhythmic interpretation and syncopation
  • Singing with stylistic swagger and groove-based phrasing
  • SAB part independence and balance in three-part mixed voicing
  • Ensemble cohesion with recorded accompaniment
  • Diction and articulation in contemporary spiritual style
