About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as one of the most prolific composers and arrangers in American choral music, with over 500 works published across multiple publishers including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Heritage Music Press.

Moore's catalog spans sacred, secular, educational, and pop choral repertoire alongside organ and piano works and instructional texts. His compositions appear regularly at state and national music festivals, and he has received the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times. In 2012, the American Choral Directors Association recognized him among 400 elite composers of historical significance in American choral music.

Why we love this

Moore's arrangement captures the infectious energy of the spiritual while maintaining accessibility for 3-part choirs. The inclusion of both a recorded accompaniment and SoundPax instrumental parts gives you flexibility in rehearsal and performance, whether you need full instrumental support or want to feature your singers' voices alone. This is the kind of arrangement that energizes rehearsals and leaves audiences smiling.

What to expect

Energetic and celebratory, with the swagger and syncopation of a spiritual that swings. The arrangement invites listeners aboard a metaphorical train, building momentum through layered parts and a groove that sits somewhere between traditional gospel and contemporary choral sound.

Who it's for

Any choir seeking an uplifting gospel piece that works for mixed or divided treble and lower voices. The 3-part voicing is accessible for developing choirs while offering enough rhythmic and harmonic interest to keep experienced singers engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic groove early in rehearsal. The funky character depends on confident, synchronized attacks and releases, especially in the rhythm section.
  • Feature the SoundTrax recording during early rehearsals to help singers internalize the gospel style and phrasing before working independently from the accompaniment.
  • Balance the three parts so no single line dominates. In gospel arrangements, the interplay between parts creates the fullness, not any one voice.
  • Let the text drive your interpretation. Gospel language and narrative deserve conversational phrasing rather than overly formal diction.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or finale when you want to shift energy and mood. It works equally well on a spring pops concert, a community celebration, or a sacred music program where it can sit alongside more traditional spirituals or contemporary gospel pieces.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in syncopated, swing-based grooves
  • Stylistic interpretation of gospel and spiritual conventions
  • Singing in three independent parts with textural balance
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues and tempos
  • Diction and phrasing appropriate to gospel idiom
