Why we love this

Moore captures the infectious energy of this spiritual in a setting that sits perfectly in young men's voices. The rhythmic propulsion carries the piece forward with such drive that singers stay engaged from start to finish, and the dynamic contrasts give you real moments to shape and build musical architecture.

What to expect

Bright, propulsive, and joyful. The rhythmic drive creates an almost irresistible forward motion that makes singers feel the momentum in their bodies. There's a celebration here that builds through to a satisfying conclusion.

Who it's for

Young men's choirs and TTB ensembles looking for repertoire with genuine spirit and accessibility. This arrangement works for singers who are building confidence in part singing and need music that feels contemporary and energetic rather than heavy.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic groove early in rehearsal; the piece thrives on a steady, propulsive pulse that binds all three parts together.
  • Lean into the dynamic shifts to create real contrast between sections. The excitement Moore builds depends on clear arrivals and releases.
  • Balance the lower voices to anchor the harmonies while keeping the top part singing through with clarity and brightness.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals for a thematic program, or use it as a closing piece where its upbeat energy sends the audience out on a high note. The 12-page length and straightforward vocal writing make it a smart choice for mid-season programming when you want something rewarding but not technically demanding.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence in three-part harmony
  • Rhythmic precision and ensemble synchronization
  • Dynamic control and expressive phrasing
  • Sustaining vocal energy across a full phrase
