About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He has served as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and maintains an active career as a composer and arranger with over 500 published works across sacred, secular, and educational genres.

Moore's compositions appear regularly at state contests and festivals and have been performed at regional, national, and international music conventions. He is a seventeen-time recipient of the ASCAP Composers Standard Award and was recognized by the American Choral Directors Association as one of 400 elite composers of significance in American choral music history.

Why we love this

Moore captures the infectious energy of this spiritual with rhythmic precision and structural clarity. The dynamic contrasts invite singers to fully commit to the music, and the arrangement's accessibility makes it equally rewarding for developing choirs and seasoned ensembles.

What to expect

The arrangement radiates optimism and forward thrust. Rhythmic vitality powers the piece from start to finish, building through clever voice leading and dynamic layering to create genuine excitement. This is joyful music that feels earned rather than imposed.

Who it's for

SATB choirs seeking a high-energy spiritual arrangement that combines accessibility with genuine musical substance. This work suits both developing ensembles building confidence in rhythmic independence and experienced choirs looking for a piece with infectious drive and clear programming appeal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Maintain the rhythmic drive throughout the piece; this arrangement thrives on forward momentum rather than expressive rubato.
  • Shape the dynamic contrasts decisively. Find the exact moment each section builds or pulls back, and rehearse these transitions with intention.
  • Articulate the text clearly, especially during the syncopated passages, so the spiritual's narrative remains audible under the rhythmic excitement.

How to use it

Program this as an energizing moment in a concert of spirituals, where its rhythmic distinctiveness sets it apart from more introspective arrangements. It also works effectively as a closing number or as part of a worship service celebrating African American sacred music traditions.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic independence across voice parts
  • Dynamic contrast and shaping
  • Articulation and diction clarity in syncopated passages
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion during rhythmically driven textures
