More about this title

About the Composer: Peter de Rose

Peter de Rose (1900-1953) was an American composer and pianist whose gift for melody made him one of the most prolific songwriters of the early-to-mid twentieth century. Best known for "Deep Purple" and "Mood Indigo," de Rose composed hundreds of songs that became standards in jazz and popular music, many of which remain fixtures in vocal and instrumental repertoires today.

Why we love this

This collection captures the melodic sophistication and harmonic richness of American popular song at its most refined. The breadth of titles means you'll find pieces suitable for jazz combos, vocal recitals, piano trios, or solo singers, making it an exceptionally practical resource for programming across multiple ensemble types and seasons.

What to expect

Stepping into a smoky jazz club or elegant supper club of the 1930s and 1940s. These melodies are instantly recognizable yet always rewarding to play; they have the quality of old friends whose company never grows tiresome. The harmonic language is sophisticated without being forbidding, full of warm colors and emotional depth.

Who it's for

Vocalists preparing recital repertoire, jazz pianists and rhythm section players building their standards vocabulary, and music educators seeking authentic arrangements of beloved songs across multiple skill levels. The chord symbols make it equally useful for guitarists and keyboard players working in small ensemble or solo contexts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal melody against piano accompaniment and chord changes; the chord symbols allow accompanists to voice and interpret comping patterns to match the soloist's phrasing.
  • Pay attention to the lyrical contour of each melody. Many of these standards were written for singers, so phrase as you would vocally even if playing instrumentally.
  • Use the chord symbols to explore reharmonization and improvisation; jazz standards in particular reward tasteful embellishment rather than literal adherence to the printed melody.
  • Coordinate with your accompanist on tempo and rubato before rehearsal. These pieces often benefit from subtle flexibility, particularly in the bridge sections of AABA forms.

How to use it

Build a "Standards Night" concert pairing selections from this collection with contemporary material to show how these melodies continue to influence modern songwriting. Alternatively, weave individual titles throughout your season as opening numbers, encores, or solo features for singers and instrumentalists in jazz combos or chamber settings.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading lead sheets and chord symbols for accompaniment and improvisation
  • Interpreting lyrical phrasing and melodic shape across vocal and instrumental contexts
  • Understanding song forms (32-bar AABA, 12-bar blues changes, etc.) through authentic repertoire
  • Collaboration between melody and rhythm section players in small ensemble settings
  • Sight-reading across multiple clefs and transpositions
