About the Composer: David Lantz III

David Lantz III

David Lantz III brings twenty-plus years of public school vocal music teaching to his prolific compositional output, having published approximately 500 works across sacred and secular choral genres with major U.S. publishers. His musical training extends beyond choral writing; he has composed for orchestra, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, and chamber groups, while maintaining active work as a music editor, engraver, and performing bassist and vocalist in pop and jazz settings.

Lantz directs church choirs in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife, fellow composer Marti Lunn Lantz, and their five musical children. His dual identity as both educator and composer informs repertoire that speaks directly to the needs and capabilities of student singers.

Why we love this

Lantz writes with genuine affection for American folk idioms while refusing to settle for simplistic arranging. The contemporary original melody and text carry folk authenticity without pastiche, and the optional instrumental parts (mandolin, guitar, bass, violin) transform a straight choral piece into something with ensemble character and flexibility. A director can program this as pure SAB voicing, or layer in live or recorded instrumentation to create real textural depth.

What to expect

Warm and affirming, like a song that's been passed down but feels brand new. The buoyant melody sits comfortably in the middle voices while the accompaniment provides harmonic richness, creating an intimate rather than grand sound that feels both hopeful and grounded.

Who it's for

SAB choirs seeking contemporary repertoire with genuine folk character and pedagogical flexibility. This works equally well for high school mixed choirs, community ensembles, and church singers who want accessible voicing without sacrificing musical substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the text and melody lead the interpretation first; the folk character will emerge naturally from honest singing rather than affectation or excessive shaping.
  • Use the metric changes as breathing moments for singers rather than technical hurdles. Lantz's accompaniment guides these transitions gracefully, so trust the harmonic support.
  • If using optional instrumentation, rehearse singers independently first to establish vocal ownership of the melody, then add instruments progressively to maintain clarity.
  • The recorded accompaniment works well for rehearsal when live instruments aren't available, but consider how a single live mandolin or guitar might enhance a performance even without the full ensemble.

How to use it

Program this in spring concert settings where you want to showcase student singers in accessible, singable material that still impresses an audience. The optional instrumentation makes it a natural pairing with other contemporary folk-inspired works, or it can stand alone as a refreshing contrast to more formal classical arrangements on a mixed program.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and singing in SAB voicing with clear part independence
  • Navigating metric changes (3-part mixed meters) with rhythmic confidence
  • Maintaining vocal tone and intonation in contemporary harmonic settings
  • Interpreting text-driven phrasing in secular choral literature
