More about this title

About the Composer: David Lantz III

David Lantz III

David Lantz III brings twenty years of classroom experience as a vocal music educator in Pennsylvania's public schools to his prolific compositional career. His catalog of nearly 500 published works spans sacred and secular choral literature, orchestral scores, symphonic band arrangements, and chamber music, establishing him as a versatile voice in American choral composition.

Beyond the page, Lantz remains active as a church choir director, music editor, and performer, playing bass and vocals in pop and jazz settings. He shares his musical life with his wife, composer Marti Lunn Lutz, and their five musically trained children in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Why we love this

Lantz writes for singers, not around them. His secular choral work sits comfortably in the middle range of most voices, avoiding the extreme tessitura and angular intervals that can frustrate a developing ensemble. The recorded accompaniment offers your singers a reliable reference point without sacrificing the opportunity for genuine interpretation.

What to expect

The piece unfolds with warmth and directness, drawing listeners into an intimate emotional landscape. Lantz builds momentum through careful harmonic layering and phrase extension, creating a sense of arrival that feels earned rather than rushed.

Who it's for

This octavo works for intermediate to advanced high school choirs, college non-majors ensembles, and community choruses seeking accessible yet musically satisfying secular repertoire. It suits both concert programming and festival competitions, as it presents technical challenge without demanding specialized vocal technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the blend carefully during the opening phrases; these tend to feel exposed without full ensemble energy behind them.
  • Let the recorded accompaniment guide tempo and harmonic framework, but encourage your singers to breathe naturally rather than rushing through phrase endings to match the track.
  • Mark dynamic shifts in rehearsal well before performance; Lantz often builds intensity gradually, and singers need clear landmarks to track the arc.

How to use it

Pair this with contrasting contemporary secular works to build a concert set that showcases different compositional voices within accessible choral writing. It also serves as a confidence builder earlier in the season, allowing your ensemble to develop cohesion on rewarding music before tackling more demanding repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending sustained tones in mixed harmony
  • Following accompaniment while maintaining independent vocal lines
  • Shaping phrases with dynamic nuance rather than relying on text painting alone
  • Managing breath placement in longer phrases without sacrificing legit tone
