Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

More about this title

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock earned degrees in Music Education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, bringing deep pedagogical training to his work in the classroom and on the page. His career spans performance (trumpet with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, plus touring work with dance bands), composition, and arranging, resulting in over 600 publications across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. He taught instrumental music in secondary schools for two decades, served as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, and chaired that institution's Music Education Department for four years. His expertise in curriculum design and ensemble pedagogy informs every level of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method.

Beyond the classroom, Bullock has led clinics and workshops internationally and across the United States, contributed arrangements to the Music Expressions curriculum (Alfred Music/Belwin), and maintained ASCAP membership since 1980. His dual foundation in music education theory and practical ensemble experience makes him uniquely qualified to build methods that balance musical growth with realistic classroom application.

Why we love this

Level 2 sustains the deliberate pacing of Level One while introducing genuinely engaging material: 11 recognizable popular standards and two substantial commissioned pieces by respected composers give bass players meaningful repertoire to own, not just exercises to endure. The inclusion of multiple accompaniment styles via MakeMusic Cloud transforms practice and performance, letting you adapt arrangements to your ensemble's strengths rather than fitting your program to a single version.

What to expect

A practical hybrid of classical ensemble discipline and modern musical relevance. The commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance, Destiny) offer substance and artistry, while the popular standards make the work feel connected to music outside the rehearsal room.

Who it's for

Electric bass students in concert band programs who need methodical instruction with contemporary appeal. This book serves ensembles where bass guitar has become a regular concert band voice, particularly programs integrating popular music or seeking to retain bass players through engaging repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Anchor the ensemble by locking in with the kick drum during rock and swing arrangements; the bass line thrives when rhythm section communication is locked.
  • Explore the different accompaniment styles available on MakeMusic Cloud before rehearsals; selecting arrangements that match your ensemble's instrumentation prevents struggling students from trying to compete with dense production.
  • Apply scale patterns from the study materials directly to the popular standards; recognizing the harmonic shape of Sleigh Ride or Star Wars reinforces what technique work builds.

How to use it

Use Level 2 as your foundation text for ensemble bass instruction in concert band contexts, drawing on the popular standards to scaffold learning during fall and winter concert seasons when recognizable material builds audience connection and student morale. The rhythm and range expansion makes this suitable for second-year ensemble students or as a sight-reading resource during sectional work.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range on electric bass
  • Scale study across multiple positions
  • Mixed rhythm reading (whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and syncopated figures)
  • Ensemble balance and rhythm section awareness
  • Reading in multiple styles (classical, world music, popular, patriotic)
