Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of practical experience to music education, holding degrees at every level through the doctorate in Music Education. His performing background spans classical work with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, as well as professional engagements with show bands and touring dance ensembles across the United States. This dual mastery of both concert and commercial music informs his pedagogical approach.

As a composer and arranger, Bullock has created over 600 works across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band contexts. He spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in schools and served as an assistant band director and department chair at Ithaca College's School of Music. His contributions to music education extend internationally through clinics and workshops, and he holds membership in ASCAP since 1980.

Why we love this

This book strikes a genuine balance between building tuba technique and keeping students engaged with music they recognize. The inclusion of well-loved standards alongside two substantial commissioned concert pieces means your ensemble hears real composition craft while reinforcing fundamentals, and the flexible accompaniment options through MakeMusic Cloud let you customize the sound for any rehearsal space or performance setting.

What to expect

A refreshing mix of purposeful technique building and immediate musical satisfaction. You'll work through scales and rhythmic challenges that matter, then reward that effort with recognizable melodies from film and Broadway that make students feel like real musicians rather than students drilling exercises.

Who it's for

Tuba students in their second year of band study who are ready to expand beyond foundational exercises. The method works equally well for classroom band programs and private studio work with tuba students progressing through a structured curriculum.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the different accompaniment styles available in MakeMusic Cloud for each piece. Switching between versions helps students adapt to varied musical contexts and keeps familiar material fresh during rehearsals.
  • Use the two commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance, Destiny) as performance anchors. These give your program substance and showcase student musicianship beyond pop-standard arrangements.
  • Balance your rehearsal between the method work on the CD and the accompaniment cloud options. The recorded versions maintain consistent tempo and ensemble sound while the cloud versions offer flexibility for tempo adjustments and sectional work.

How to use it

Move through Level 2 as your primary rehearsal resource during the fall and winter concert season, using the popular standards as sectional warm-ups and confidence builders. Save the two commissioned pieces for your winter or spring concert programs; they're polished enough to anchor a concert and substantial enough to showcase how far students have come since Level 1.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading in treble clef with expanding range and leger lines
  • Scale construction and major scale fluency in multiple keys
  • Rhythmic reading including sixteenth-note patterns and syncopation
  • Breath control and tone production across a wider dynamic range
  • Ensemble balance and intonation within concert band contexts
  • Interpretation of varied musical styles (classical, world music, patriotic, jazz-influenced)
