Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

More about this title

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings a rare combination of professional performance experience and deep music education credentials to his teaching materials. His background encompasses work as a trumpeter with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, along with extensive touring with show and dance bands, which gives him authentic insight into the demands placed on young musicians learning to play together.

As an educator, Bullock taught instrumental music in secondary schools for two decades and served as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His prolific output includes over 600 compositions and arrangements across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, with particular recognition for his collaborative work on the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and the Music Expressions curriculum.

Why we love this

This method respects the pace and confidence students built in Level One while strategically expanding their technical range and musical repertoire without overwhelming them. The inclusion of genuinely recognizable songs (Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Sleigh Ride) alongside foundational technique work keeps motivation high, and the commissioned pieces by del Borgo and Clark give students performance goals beyond the pop arrangements.

What to expect

Approachable yet purposeful. The familiar tunes offer immediate gratification, while the scale studies and technical exercises provide the scaffolding needed for real musical growth. The mix of classical, world, patriotic, and popular material feels contemporary without abandoning the fundamentals that make a young clarinetist solid.

Who it's for

Clarinet students in their second year of study, typically in concert band settings, who have completed Level One and are ready to expand their range and tackle ensemble playing with more independence. This book also serves students preparing to transition into more varied concert repertoire and those encountering world music and popular song arrangements for the first time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the multiple accompaniment styles available through MakeMusic Cloud for each piece; using contrasting arrangements on the same tune reveals how tempo, texture, and groove affect your own musical choices.
  • Build consistency on the scale studies and technical exercises before moving to the full performance pieces; this method's progression assumes solid fundamentals at each stage.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to develop your internal pulse and to hear how your part sits within the full ensemble texture, especially in the popular standards where rhythm section clarity matters.
  • Approach the two commissioned performance pieces (Celtic Air and Dance and Destiny) as short concerts in miniature; they reward musical phrasing and ensemble balance more than the exercise pages do.

How to use it

Pair the popular standards with themed concerts (holiday program with Sleigh Ride and Merry Little Christmas, or a film music night with Star Wars and Wizard of Oz) to build ensemble cohesion while keeping students engaged. The commissioned pieces work well as closing numbers for festival or concert settings where you want to showcase what students have actually learned rather than relying solely on simplified arrangements.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range playing on B-flat clarinet
  • Scale construction and fluency in multiple keys
  • Syncopated rhythms and mixed meters
  • Listening for balance and blend in ensemble contexts
  • Interpretation of popular melodies and classical forms
  • Sight-reading from measured, progressively challenging notation
