Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

Why we love this

Level 2 moves forward with real musical substance, not busywork. The mix of classical, world, and patriotic material keeps students engaged with varied musical contexts, while the eleven popular standards (Star Wars, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sleigh Ride) remind students why they picked up the horn in the first place. The two commissioned performance pieces by Elliot del Borgo and Larry Clark give your band something fresh and substantial to work toward.

What to expect

A balance of discovery and achievement. Students encounter familiar melodies that make them feel like real musicians while building the scales, technique, and ensemble awareness that sustains serious playing. The range expansion and rhythmic complexity create genuine challenge without overwhelm.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophone players in their second year of band study who are ready to expand their technical vocabulary and range. This book serves students learning within a concert band program who benefit from structured progression and a mix of musical styles that reflects the full scope of band repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the multiple accompaniment styles available through MakeMusic Cloud; switching between styles keeps rehearsals fresh and helps students understand how the same melody adapts to different musical settings.
  • Use the included CD accompaniment to establish steady ensemble reference during initial learning; the recorded parts free you to listen critically to intonation and blend.
  • Build rhythmic independence by having students practice scale studies and technique exercises without the accompaniment first, then layer it in once the part is secure.

How to use it

Sequence this as the core instructional material during your second year of teaching the section, assigning pieces strategically to build toward your spring concert programming. The popular standards work well as morale boosters mid-year, while the commissioned performance pieces by del Borgo and Clark can anchor a concert set or festival performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range development on tenor saxophone
  • Scale studies across multiple keys
  • Reading rhythmic variety including syncopation
  • Ensemble intonation and blend in concert band texture
  • Style awareness through classical, world music, and popular arrangements
  • Technique fundamentals including articulation and breath control
