Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brought decades of performance experience to his work as an educator and composer. A trumpet performer who appeared with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, and later traveled nationally with dance bands, he understood firsthand what student musicians needed to grow. He earned degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in music education, then spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in schools. At Ithaca College's School of Music, he served as assistant band director and led the Music Education Department for four years.

Bullock's output as a composer and arranger spans more than 600 published works across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. His collaborative work on the Belwin 21st Century Band Method reflects his commitment to building strong foundational skills while keeping students engaged with music they recognize and enjoy. A member of ASCAP since 1980, he has conducted clinics and workshops across the United States, Canada, and England, sharing his pedagogical philosophy with music educators nationwide.

Why we love this

This method book sustains momentum from Level One while introducing meaningful repertoire that keeps students invested. The blend of classical pieces, world music, patriotic selections, and popular standards (Star Wars, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sleigh Ride) creates a balanced diet that rewards practice with music students actually want to play. The inclusion of two commissioned concert works by respected composers gives students a genuine performance goal beyond exercises.

What to expect

A musical bridge from beginner to intermediate, balancing structured technique with the joy of recognition. Students encounter familiar melodies alongside carefully crafted concert pieces, creating a sense of progress that feels both challenging and rewarding.

Who it's for

Oboe students who have completed Level One and are ready to expand their range and tackle more sophisticated rhythmic patterns and ensemble textures. This book suits students in concert band settings who benefit from the integrated percussion material and thrive when popular melodies are woven alongside classical foundations.

How to get the most out of it

  • Rotate between the popular standards and the classical/world music pieces to maintain student motivation across a full year of study.
  • Use the multiple accompaniment options available on MakeMusic Cloud to explore different styles and interpretations of the same piece; this deepens listening skills and exposes students to arranging possibilities.
  • Prioritize the two commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance, and Destiny) as recital or concert repertoire; they represent the quality performance literature your oboe students should be prepared to execute.
  • Assign scale studies in conjunction with the melodic material rather than in isolation; connect technical work to the keys and intervals students encounter in the songs they're learning.

How to use it

Sequence the popular standards alongside concert band full-group rehearsals to maintain oboe student engagement during a long school year. The two commissioned pieces work beautifully as oboe solos or small ensemble features on a winter or spring concert. Use the CD and MakeMusic Cloud accompaniments to support sectional rehearsals during times when full band is not available.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range on oboe (expansion beyond Level One)
  • Scale study in multiple keys
  • Mixed and syncopated rhythmic patterns
  • Ensemble intonation and balance in concert band texture
  • Articulation and phrasing in both classical and contemporary styles
  • Reading and performing from full-score accompaniment cues
