Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

More about this title

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of classroom experience and professional performance to his work as a composer and arranger. He holds degrees in music education through the doctoral level and spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in schools, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His background as a trumpet performer with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and experience touring with professional ensembles informs his understanding of what works on the bandstand.

Bullock has published more than 600 compositions and arrangements across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. As co-author of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method, he drew on his extensive teaching and composing background to create materials that balance skill-building with repertoire that engages young musicians. He has conducted clinics and workshops throughout North America and abroad, and has been a member of ASCAP since 1980.

Why we love this

This method book sits at the sweet spot where technical growth meets genuine musical repertoire. The inclusion of recognizable standards and two commissioned performance pieces (by Elliot del Borgo and Larry Clark) means your baritone players aren't just drilling exercises; they're learning through music that matters to them. The flexibility of accompaniment styles available on MakeMusic Cloud lets you customize how each piece sounds, giving your ensemble options to match your rehearsal focus or performance goals.

What to expect

A mix of familiar melodies alongside classical foundations. One moment you're playing a lyrical arrangement of "Sleigh Ride," the next you're deepening your technique with scale studies and ensemble pieces that demand careful listening and balanced dynamics.

Who it's for

Baritone players in their second year of band study who are ready to expand their range and rhythmic vocabulary while building ensemble awareness. This book works best for intermediate concert band programs where students have mastered foundational single-tonguing and basic concert band etiquette from Level One.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the different accompaniment styles available on MakeMusic Cloud before deciding which arrangement suits your rehearsal goal. A swing version of a standard might emphasize rhythmic precision, while a traditional arrangement could highlight tonal blend.
  • Use the percussion integration deliberately. The layout that combines snare drum, bass drum, auxiliary percussion, and keyboard percussion on alternating pages helps your full ensemble stay balanced and aware of the complete texture.
  • Tackle the two commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark) as full ensemble showcases rather than as routine exercises. These compositions are designed to demonstrate the musicianship your baritones have built across the method.

How to use it

Move through Level Two sequentially during your first and second years of study to ensure steady skill progression. The performance pieces and popular standards integrate naturally into fall concerts and holiday programs, while the scale studies and technique exercises support your daily rehearsal foundation throughout the year.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range on baritone
  • Major and minor scales
  • Mixed rhythms including syncopation
  • Dynamic control and tone blending in ensemble contexts
