Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock's career bridges performance, composition, and classroom instruction. A trumpeter trained under Harry Glantz, James Ode, and Craig McHenry, he performed with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, as well as with touring dance bands across the country. His education credentials include undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in Music Education.

As a composer and arranger, Bullock has created over 600 works for concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. He spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in schools and served as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His work on the Belwin 21st Century Band Method reflects decades of direct experience with what students need to progress systematically. Bullock has led clinics across the United States, Canada, and England, and holds ASCAP membership since 1980.

Why we love this

This Level 2 book moves students forward without losing momentum, balancing technical growth with genuine musical engagement. The mix of commissioned pieces by Elliot del Borgo and Larry Clark alongside recognizable standards and world music keeps rehearsals fresh and gives students repertoire they actually want to play. With multiple accompaniment styles available through MakeMusic Cloud, you can match the musical context to your teaching goals rather than being locked into a single interpretation.

What to expect

A natural step forward that doesn't feel like a step at all. Students recognize melodies from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Star Wars while their fingers work out new valve combinations and their ears adjust to more complex rhythmic textures. The book balances comfort with challenge, mixing popular material and folk traditions with disciplined technique building.

Who it's for

Trombone students who have completed Level 1 and are ready to expand their range, rhythm reading, and ensemble sound. This book works for school band programs moving into their second year of study, as well as private students advancing beyond foundational repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Layer in the MakeMusic Cloud accompaniments after students solidify their parts without them; the style options let you explore how different grooves and orchestrations change the character of each piece.
  • Isolate the range-expanding passages in practice sessions before full ensemble work; Level 2 pushes the trombone further, so breaking those measures into focused technical drills prevents frustration during run-throughs.
  • Treat the commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance, Destiny) as performance highlights rather than exercises; they're written for genuine musical expression, so give them rehearsal time alongside the standards.

How to use it

Integrate the standards and world music pieces into seasonal concerts; Sleigh Ride and The Little Drummer Boy fit December programs, while other titles work year-round. Use the commissioned pieces as performance highlights in spring concerts where students can demonstrate growth beyond typical method book content. Scale studies and rhythmic exercises support daily warm-up and technique block routines without requiring additional materials.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range on trombone (beyond Level 1)
  • Complex rhythmic patterns and mixed meters
  • Scale studies in multiple keys
  • Ensemble balance and blend in concert band texture
  • Reading articulations and dynamic shaping
  • Sight-reading songs in styles from classical to world music to American standards
