Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

About the Author: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of performance and classroom experience to his work as a composer and arranger. A trumpet performer who has played with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, as well as touring dance bands across the country, he understands the demands placed on young musicians. He holds degrees at every level in music education and taught instrumental music in public school classrooms for 20 years, including seven years as an assistant band director at the Ithaca College School of Music.

Bullock's output spans more than 600 published works across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. His involvement with the Music Expressions curriculum and his role as co-author of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method reflect his commitment to building method materials that work in real rehearsal rooms. He has presented clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England, and has been an ASCAP member since 1980.

Why we love this

This method keeps the momentum going from Level One without losing students in the transition. The mix of classical foundations, world music, and recognizable popular standards (Star Wars, Sleigh Ride, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) means horn players stay invested while their range and technique expand. The inclusion of two commissioned performance pieces gives students something genuinely musical to work toward, not just exercises.

What to expect

This book balances serious musicianship with approachable joy. Familiar melodies sit comfortably alongside world music and classical miniatures, creating a rehearsal experience that doesn't feel regimented. The horn part sits well in the ensemble voice while offering enough range and rhythmic variety to keep practice sessions fresh.

Who it's for

Horn players in their second year of study who are ready to expand their range and tackle more complex rhythms and ensemble textures. This book works for students in middle school band programs or older beginners making rapid progress. Teachers building a consistent method curriculum will find Level Two maintains pedagogical continuity while introducing repertoire that keeps young players engaged.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the multiple accompaniment styles available through MakeMusic Cloud to match the character of each piece; the syncopated and pop-inflected arrangements reward different tonal approaches than the classical selections.
  • Build flexibility with the scale studies by alternating between different rhythmic articulations rather than repeating the same pattern each time through.
  • Pay attention to the percussion integration on the left-hand pages; the rhythm section choices will inform your phrasing and ensemble balance.
  • Approach the commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance, Destiny) as musical narratives rather than technique displays; let the compositional intent guide your interpretation before focusing on technical challenges.

How to use it

Integrate this method as your core horn curriculum for the second year, programming one of the popular standards for a winter concert or family performance night to build community investment in the ensemble. The two commissioned pieces work effectively as standalone performance items or as anchors for a thematic concert exploring contemporary wind band writing.
