Description
Level Two, continues at the same pace as Level One, expanding range, scale study, rhythms, technique, and ensemble playing. As well as classical, world music, and patriotic pieces, there are 11 popular standard songs, including: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang * Sleigh Ride * A Trumpeter's Lullaby * The Little Drummer Boy * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing * The Syncopated Clock * We're Off to See the Wizard * The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down * Theme from Star Wars. The two commissioned performance pieces are Celtic Air and Dance by Elliot del Borgo, and Destiny by Larry Clark. All exercises, songs, and performance pieces are on one CD accompaniment. In addition, accompaniments are available on MakeMusic Cloud by Coda Music Technology; most of the pieces have multiple choices of different styles of accompaniments. This book combines the percussion book (snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion) on left hand pages, and keyboard percussion on right hand pages.

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings three decades of practical experience across performance, composition, and education to his work as co-author of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method. His credentials include undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in music education, and he has composed and arranged over 600 works for concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. Early in his career, he performed trumpet professionally with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, and toured nationally with dance bands, giving him deep insight into what student musicians need to develop musical confidence.

Bullock taught instrumental music in public school classrooms for 20 years and served as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His extensive clinic work across the United States, Canada, and England reflects his commitment to sharing pedagogical approaches with music educators at all levels. He has been an ASCAP member since 1980 and is recognized in Who's Who in Entertainment.

Why we love this

This method book understands that bassoon students thrive when they encounter recognizable music early. The inclusion of standards like "Sleigh Ride" and the "Star Wars" theme keeps young players engaged while building fundamentals, and the multiple accompaniment styles available through MakeMusic Cloud let you customize the sound without rearranging. The thoughtful commissioning of two original performance pieces by Elliot del Borgo and Larry Clark ensures students have grade-appropriate concert material that respects the bassoon's voice.

What to expect

Familiar melodies meet serious musicianship. You get the immediate reward of recognizing "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" alongside the satisfaction of tackling a commissioned piece designed specifically for your level. The mix of classical, world music, and patriotic material creates a program that feels both accessible and artistically substantive.

Who it's for

This book serves bassoon students who have completed Level 1 and are ready to expand their range and rhythmic vocabulary. It works equally well in full concert band settings and small woodwind ensembles, providing material scaled for players roughly in grades 4-6 or equivalent intermediate level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the different accompaniment options in MakeMusic Cloud for the popular songs; switching between styles keeps rehearsals dynamic and shows students how the same melody adapts across musical contexts.
  • Use the snare drum and auxiliary percussion exercises on the left-hand pages to build listening skills and independence when other sections enter during ensemble pieces.
  • Start with the CD accompaniment to establish tempo and style reference, then gradually shift to live pianist accompaniment as ensemble confidence grows.

How to use it

Program the commissioned pieces (Celtic Air and Dance and Destiny) as standalone performance items on a winter or spring concert; they give your band a distinctly curated, concert-quality sound. Weave the popular standards throughout the year as sectional warm-ups or short ensemble breaks during longer rehearsals, or group them thematically for a themed concert that speaks to general audiences and families.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended range on bassoon with secure intonation
  • Scale studies across multiple keys and modes
  • Rhythmic reading including syncopation and mixed meters
  • Ensemble balance and blend within concert band texture
  • Style interpretation across classical, world music, and contemporary idioms
  • Sight-reading accuracy in real performance contexts
