James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has published over 800 compositions across instrumental, vocal, and educational contexts, establishing himself as a leading voice in band pedagogy. His career spans nearly two decades of public school teaching alongside extensive clinical work at the college and university level, reaching audiences across the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England. His orchestration studies under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University–Long Beach inform the sophistication of his educational writing.

The Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, has been translated into French and Norwegian and remains in active use throughout Norway and beyond. Ployhar's compositions have aired on network television and received performances internationally across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim. He holds a BS from Valley City State University, an MA from Northern Colorado University, and has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
