About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped band education through more than 800 published works and the widely adopted Contemporary Band Course, now an Alfred Music publication. His curriculum has crossed borders, translated into French and Norwegian, and remains central to band programs across the United States and internationally. Beyond composition, Ployhar brings orchestral expertise gained through study with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and he holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with graduate study in composition at California State University-Long Beach.

During his 19+ years in public school teaching, Ployhar established himself as a sought-after clinician and conductor, working with students and educators throughout North America and Europe. His contributions to band music earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and he has served as a member of the American Bandmasters Association. His frequent appearances at clinics and university workshops have made him a trusted voice in contemporary band pedagogy.

Why we love this

Band Today remains the gold standard for horn players entering concert band because Ployhar understood that beginning horn students need clear, systematic progress without overwhelming technical demands. The method book balances fundamental concepts across a full ensemble context, allowing horn sections to develop independence and ensemble awareness from day one rather than in isolation.

What to expect

The horn part moves forward with purposeful, achievable steps. Students encounter music that sounds musical and complete within the ensemble context, building confidence as they discover their voice contributes meaningfully to the band's sound.

Who it's for

Band Today, Part 1 serves first-year horn students in concert band settings, whether in full-class band instruction or private study. Directors introducing students to the Contemporary Band Course curriculum will find this book creates a consistent foundation that correlates with materials for all other band instruments.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish consistent embouchure habits early by playing exercises in short, focused sessions rather than extended practice stretches; horn students benefit from frequent rest and reset time to avoid tension.
  • Coordinate with your full band during Band Today lessons so horn players hear how their parts function within the ensemble texture and understand their role in the harmonic foundation.
  • Use the supplementary technic books from the Contemporary Band Course to reinforce concepts introduced in Part 1, allowing horn players to deepen facility on specific challenges without repeating the method book material.

How to use it

Implement Band Today, Part 1 as the core method book for beginning horn students during the first year of band instruction, pairing it with corresponding trumpet, clarinet, and other parts to build a functioning ensemble from lesson one. The method's integrated approach means your full band rehearsals can follow the curriculum sequentially, allowing all sections to progress together musically.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading treble clef with ledger lines above and below the staff
  • Producing focused tone on horn in F across the basic range
  • Executing common rhythmic patterns in simple meters (2/4, 3/4, 4/4)
  • Responding to standard band warm-up and articulation exercises
  • Playing in tune as part of a section within full band texture
  • Understanding basic fingering patterns and valve coordination
