About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally acclaimed musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the mentorship of Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to develop exceptional improvisational skills. His early studies combined piano and accordion, instruments that would define his lifelong creative contributions.
Palmer authored 789 published works encompassing accordion methods, piano pedagogies, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo compositions, and choral pieces. Many of these publications were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across the globe. His expertise in Baroque music ornamentation earned him worldwide recognition and became the foundation for the celebrated Alfred Masterworks series.
Beyond his prolific compositioning, Palmer distinguished himself as an innovator in music education. He taught the first successful college accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years and conducted the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for an extended period. His scholarly dedication to Classical and Baroque music research culminated in honors including a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983). Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. throughout his tenure from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Morton brought a fresh vision to the business after earning his business degree from City College of New York.
Under Morton's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse. He championed the creation of instructional materials, beginning with an accordion series and expanding to include foundational methods for guitar, piano, and recorder. The company's growth necessitated a major move in 1975, relocating its main office to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.

Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her groundbreaking work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she collaborated with Dr. Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano. Her professional recognition includes listings in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
