About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who shaped music education through his prolific compositional output. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the mentorship of Mae Vardeman, studying piano and accordion during his formative years. His early career included radio performances and ensemble work while attending Whitworth College and Millsaps College, followed by advanced studies at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a prestigious two-year scholarship.
Palmer's scholarly contributions earned him distinction throughout the academic world. He taught at the University of Houston for 18 years, establishing the institution's first successful college accordion courses. His research into Baroque music ornamentation became foundational to the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Over his lifetime, he produced 789 published works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His expertise was formally recognized through a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.
Beyond his compositional and pedagogical work, Palmer served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years and held a directorship at the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. He maintained active memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, cementing his role as a central figure in twentieth-century music education and research.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. throughout his 64-year tenure from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam Manus, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music before acquiring and merging with Alfred & Company in 1930. Manus held a business degree from City College of New York and was an accomplished clarinetist and pianist.
During his presidency, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education leader. Beginning in the 1950s, he championed the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that would define the company's identity for decades. This strategic shift positioned Alfred Music as an innovator in educational music materials. The company experienced substantial growth over the following twenty years, prompting a relocation of its main office to Los Angeles in 1975 and the establishment of a distribution center in upstate New York.
Under Manus's continued leadership, his sons Ron and Steve joined the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively, carrying forward the family legacy. Together they expanded Alfred Music's reach internationally with offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. In 2005, the company acquired Warner Bros.
