About the Composer: Willard A. Palmer

Willard A. Palmer

Dr. Willard A. Palmer stands as one of the most prolific and influential music educators of his generation, having published 789 works spanning piano methods, accordion technique books, guitar instruction, and choral compositions. His output has been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, reaching students across continents. Palmer's own path began as a child prodigy performing on radio at age 13, studies that deepened under Mae Vardeman's mentorship in rigorous piano technique and improvisation.

Palmer's later career became defined by meticulous scholarship in Baroque and Classical music, particularly ornamentation practices that shaped the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. His academic credentials include post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he taught the first successful collegiate accordion courses for 18 years, and recognition with a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and Doctor of Music degree (1983). As director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, Palmer combined the precision of a musicologist with the practical wisdom of a working teacher.

Why we love this

Alfred's Technic Books deserve their reputation because they solve the pacing problem many teachers face. Rather than fishing for supplementary exercises that don't align with what students are learning, this book sequences technical work in tandem with the Lesson Book, so every drill reinforces current repertoire and builds on established skills.

What to expect

Opening this book reveals page after page of manageable, purposeful work. The exercises feel logical and grounded, never arbitrary; each page builds confidence rather than frustration.

Who it's for

This resource is essential for any piano teacher using Alfred's Basic Piano Library at Level 2. It serves students ready to strengthen their reading accuracy and hand independence without interrupting the flow of their lesson work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Assign exercises from this Technic Book weekly rather than all at once; students benefit from spreading short bursts of focused drilling across practice sessions.
  • Have students complete rhythm drills before moving to hand coordination exercises so they internalize the pulse first.
  • Rotate between reading exercises and kinesthetic work to maintain engagement; variety prevents the monotony that can plague drill books.

How to use it

Integrate one or two exercises from the Technic Book into every private lesson as a warm-up or mid-lesson focus shift. Teachers working with group piano or class piano settings can assign these as standardized technical homework that doesn't fragment instruction across multiple materials.

Skills your students will build

  • Sight-reading fluency in treble and bass clefs
  • Rhythmic accuracy and note reading working in tandem
  • Hand coordination and independence at the elementary level
  • Finger dexterity and proper hand position through technique-focused exercises
  • Confidence in reading new material without excessive teacher guidance
