About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray brings over two decades of classroom experience to her work as Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School in California, where she has shaped the musical lives of students since 2004. Her output as a composer is prolific, more than 100 published choral works, grounded in formal training that includes degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master's in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. Beyond the rehearsal room, Ruth is an active performer and adventurer who finds inspiration in travel, swimming, reading, and cycling with her husband Douglas.

Why we love this

Gray and Beck have created an arrangement that keeps the familiar melody front and center while building warm harmonic layers underneath, giving your singers something instantly singable but still rewarding to balance and blend. The recorded accompaniment sits at a tempo that feels natural for holiday performances without rushing the text, letting the tune breathe.

What to expect

Warm and inviting. The arrangement wraps the beloved melody in gentle vocal layers that feel like a group gathering rather than a formal performance, making it as much fun to sing as it is to hear.

Who it's for

High school and community choirs looking for a dependable holiday selection that audiences connect with immediately. This works equally well as a concert opener, a festive finale, or a piece to build confidence in singers new to four-part harmony.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the melody dominate the first verse; use lighter dynamics in supporting voice parts to keep the tune clear and recognizable.
  • Balance the harmony parts carefully in the chorus, where all voices move together; uneven singing here will cloud the familiar tune.
  • Match vowel sounds precisely across all parts when voices sustain on the same pitch, especially during cadential moments.

How to use it

Pair this with a more complex holiday work to create a balanced concert that moves from accessible warmth to sophisticated choral writing. It also serves as an excellent opener for holiday shows, setting an immediate connection with your audience before moving into more demanding repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining melodic clarity while singing in four-part harmony
  • Matching sustained vowels across unison and divisi passages
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment for tempo and blend
  • Balancing melody and harmony in an SATB context
