About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has been directing choirs and teaching piano at Rosemead High School in California since 2004. She holds degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University, a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, and her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge. Her catalog includes over 100 published choral works that span a range of styles and occasions.
Beyond the music classroom, Gray is an active performer and composer who finds creative inspiration in travel, cycling, reading, and time spent with her husband, Douglas.
Why we love this
Gray's arrangement strips away the overly familiar and replaces it with genuine rhythmic energy and contemporary harmonic color. The pop-styled approach and musical quotes from the traditional carol create a bridge between nostalgia and freshness, giving your singers something genuinely fun to perform rather than reverent but stale. When you need a finale that actually lands and sends your audience out energized, this delivers.
What to expect
Contemporary and celebratory with a rhythmic swagger that pulls listeners into a holiday party atmosphere. The original composition carries modern harmonic color and melodic movement that keeps ears interested, while the familiar carol references create moments of recognition and warmth.
Who it's for
Choral directors programming Christmas concerts or seasonal pops events who want their singers engaged and their audience energized. Your choir doesn't need to be an advanced ensemble to execute this effectively; singers at intermediate levels will find the part-writing approachable and the groove infectious.
How to get the most out of it
- Lock the groove early in rehearsal. The SoundTrax accompaniment establishes a clear rhythmic pocket, so have your singers count and feel the kick before adding harmonic layers.
- Balance the quotes from 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' so they register as knowing winks rather than heavy-handed callbacks. They should feel spontaneous within the modern context.
- Commit to the dynamic contrast between verses and the full-choir moments. The modern production style demands clarity in texture, so guard against blending everything into one dynamic level.
How to use it
Program this as your Christmas concert closer. The pop-styled energy and shorter length (12 pages) make it ideal for ending on an upbeat, audience-friendly note. You can also use it as a standalone feature in a holiday pops or secular season concert where a higher-energy contemporary piece balances more traditional carols.
Skills your students will build
- Rhythmic precision in a groove-based style
- Balancing modern harmonic language with familiar melodic material
- Singing with contemporary performance energy and attack
- Part independence in a pop-styled arrangement
