More about this title

About the Composer: David Waggoner

David Waggoner

David Waggoner holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. His work spans choral, instrumental, and handbell repertoire, and his compositions are shaped by his experience as both an educator and church musician.

Waggoner teaches elementary music in Woodhaven, MI, and serves as Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church in Wyandotte, MI. He works with students and singers across age levels and settings, bringing classroom and liturgical contexts into his creative voice.

Why we love this

Waggoner's choral writing respects the ensemble while remaining accessible, which is especially valuable when you're balancing rehearsal time across multiple pieces. The combination of a recorded accompaniment and straightforward voicing gives your singers solid musical support during the learning phase, letting you focus on interpretation and ensemble blend rather than getting stuck in accompaniment logistics.

What to expect

The piece has the warmth and directness you'd expect from someone rooted in both school and church music traditions. It sits comfortably in the voices while creating moments of genuine harmonic interest, with text-setting that feels natural rather than forced.

Who it's for

This octavo works for choir directors teaching middle school through adult community choirs who want a piece that's musically satisfying without requiring extensive arranging or piano accompaniment logistics. It's equally useful for singers preparing a secular piece for a mixed-voice concert, or for directors building a setlist that includes accessible contemporary writing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Begin by having singers listen to the recorded accompaniment without singing along, so they can internalize the harmonic context and overall pacing before adding their parts.
  • Use the digital download to create practice files for section rehearsals by isolating individual voice parts if your audio player allows it, or loop the accompaniment for warmup.
  • Mark phrasing and breathing points in the score during the first read-through, since singers often follow the accompaniment's momentum rather than the text's natural shape.
  • Test the audio levels in your rehearsal space beforehand; digital accompaniments can either anchor singers confidently or cover them entirely depending on volume balance.

How to use it

Include this on a spring concert alongside more demanding repertoire to give your singers a moment of confidence and connection with the audience. It also serves well as a closing number or as part of a thematic program exploring themes of faith, community, or journey.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in four-part harmony with clear voice independence
  • Balancing individual line work against harmonic context
  • Responding dynamically to recorded accompaniment cues
  • Sustaining tone and blend across phrase lengths
