More about this title

About the Composer: David Waggoner

David Waggoner

David Waggoner combines classroom experience with active church music leadership. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University, grounding his compositional work in solid musical training.

Waggoner's output spans multiple genres and ensembles, including choral music, handbells, and instrumental works. Based in the Detroit area, he serves as Director of Music at First United Methodist Church in Wyandotte while teaching elementary music in Woodhaven, giving him direct insight into what works in both school and worship settings.

Why we love this

The emotional arc here feels genuine rather than manufactured. Waggoner builds from intimate opening to a powerful middle declaration, then lets the final verse breathe with earned intensity, giving singers and audiences a satisfying emotional journey without relying on volume alone.

What to expect

Tender and trusting, with a surge of hope building through the middle. The piece wraps you in quiet at the beginning, gathers strength as it declares its message of companionship, then settles into a passionate final thought that lingers.

Who it's for

Choirs seeking repertoire that combines emotional accessibility with genuine musical substance. This works equally well in school choral programs, church settings, and community ensembles where singers appreciate material that doesn't talk down to them.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening phrase with restraint; the quietness at the start establishes the intimacy that makes the middle section's "take my hand" moment land with real weight.
  • Balance the recorded accompaniment carefully during the soft passages so it supports without overwhelming the singers' vulnerability.
  • Prepare the transition into the impassioned verse deliberately. The shift should feel like a natural outpouring, not an abrupt gear change.

How to use it

Program this alongside other selections that explore themes of support and resilience. The soft opening and closing make it an effective set closer or a bridge between higher-energy pieces, while its emotional authenticity also serves well in concert contexts focused on lyrical choral writing.

Skills your students will build

  • Controlling dynamic contrast across a longer phrase
  • Sustaining emotional commitment through soft singing
  • Managing text clarity at varied dynamic levels
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues
