Description

About the Authors

Bob Phillips
Bob Phillips (born 1953) is a composer and string pedagogue who has fundamentally shaped how educators approach ensemble instruction across multiple genres. His work spans large ensemble training, stylistic diversity, and teacher development, making him one of the most prolific educational composers in the field. Over his career, he has created more than 25 instructional book series and over 200 published works for orchestras and bands. His Sound Innovations series (all six levels) and the eclectic styles collections—including Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song—have become standard resources in classrooms nationwide, used by thousands of students annually.

During 27 years directing the string program in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built an ensemble of over 700 students that became a national reference point for excellence across both classical and contemporary styles. His groups earned invitations to perform at state and national conferences, while the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which he founded, achieved international recognition through more than 80 annual performances, multiple appearances at the White House, and regular presentations at the Midwest Clinic.

Phillips has conducted all-state and honors orchestras across the country and worked as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle for 12 years. He served as assistant music director and arranger for the professional ensemble Barrage 8, created the instructional video series String Clinics to Go (widely adopted by teachers), and holds recognition as an ASCAP award-winning composer whose works appear regularly on Midwest Clinic programs.
Peter Boonshaft
Peter Loel Boonshaft stands among the most influential voices shaping music education today. His work has taken him across all fifty states and internationally as a speaker and conductor. The National Association for Music Education and Music For All recognized his leadership by naming him the inaugural recipient of the George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education. He currently serves as Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments and maintains a weekly blog that reaches educators nationwide.

His scholarly credentials and honors reflect a distinguished career spanning decades. Boonshaft holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree along with a Master of Music Education in Conducting and a Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude). He earned a Certificate from the Kodály Musical Training Institute through a Connecticut General Fellowship. His teaching positions have included Professor Emeritus at Hofstra University, faculty roles at both the University of Hartford and Moravian College, and founding directorships of the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.

Recognition from major institutions underscores his impact on the field. He has been selected three times as an Artist in Residence by the National Endowment for the Arts and received the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International. Governors from five states have issued official proclamations in his honor, and former President Ronald Reagan presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. His memberships in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi, along with multiple awards from the University of Hartford and honorary life memberships in Tri-M Music Honor Society, mark his sustained commitment to music education excellence.
Robert Sheldon
Robert Sheldon stands among today's most widely performed composers for wind band. His works appear regularly on international concert and contest programs, and ensembles worldwide perform his music with frequency that reflects both its accessibility and artistic depth. The recognition he has earned from the American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers underscores the impact of his compositional voice.

Beyond the concert stage, Sheldon shapes music education through multiple channels. He serves as lead author of Sound Innovations for Concert Band and maintains an active schedule accepting commissions while publishing new works annually. His presence in the profession extends through guest conducting roles with All-State and Regional Honor Bands, as well as clinician appearances at universities and state music education conferences across the country.

His conducting and teaching reach extends internationally, with engagements throughout Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, and China. Sheldon has led performances of his compositions in some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VanderCook College of Music honored him with a doctorate in 2020, recognizing his lasting contributions to wind band music.

Why we love this

The Spanish-language edition opens Sound Innovations to a wider population of students while maintaining the pedagogical rigor that makes the original series so effective. What distinguishes this method is its refusal to assume anything about note-reading; unlabeled noteheads force genuine music literacy rather than shape-recognition. The six-level structure with explicit progression criteria means you can defend your pacing to administrators and parents while students experience genuine achievement markers.

What to expect

Working through Sound Innovations feels like steady climbing rather than scrambling. Students encounter new challenges in measured doses, each one carefully positioned after the tools needed to solve it have already been introduced. The range of musical styles keeps the sound palette alive; a student in the first few pages may encounter folk melody, then rhythmic training, then a brief harmonic moment, all without feeling scattered.

Who it's for

String teachers and directors serving beginning students in Spanish-speaking communities or bilingual programs who need a comprehensive method that balances technical development with genuine musicality. The 72-page piano book serves accompanists and directors who want reliable harmonic support across all six proficiency levels without arranging supplementary parts themselves.

How to get the most out of it

  • Leverage the tempo controls in SI Online to slow accompaniment tracks below performance tempo during initial rehearsals, gradually increasing speed only after rhythmic accuracy is secure.
  • Assign specific PDF reinforcement pages based on where students stumble in sectional rehearsals rather than marching through the book sequentially.
  • Record yourself playing the piano part so students can practice independently between rehearsals; this removes the barrier of needing a pianist for every run-through.

How to use it

Use this as your core curriculum for beginning through intermediate string classes, allowing the six-level structure to align naturally with your school's grading or ensemble divisions. The piano book becomes essential in a mixed-level orchestra where the accompaniment must work reliably across multiple proficiency tiers, or deploy it as your primary resource when training a new director or parent volunteer on how to support rehearsals.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading unidentified noteheads on treble and bass clefs
  • Counting mixed meters and subdividing various rhythmic patterns
  • Recognizing and executing stylistic differences (classical, folk, contemporary)
  • Building interval recognition through melodic and harmonic contexts
  • Ensemble coordination with piano accompaniment across shifting tonal centers
  • Self-correcting through reinforcement exercises keyed to specific technical objectives
