About the Authors
Bob Phillips, born in 1953, is a composer, author, and conductor recognized for transforming string education through innovative pedagogy and diverse musical styles. His expertise in large group instruction and eclectic repertoire has established him as a leading figure in contemporary music education. With thousands of string students performing his works annually, Phillips has become one of the most influential educational composers of our time.
His catalog includes over 25 book series for classroom use, among them all six levels of Sound Innovations and groundbreaking eclectic collections such as Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, and Mariachi Philharmonic. Phillips has published more than 200 compositions for orchestras and bands and holds recognition as an award-winning ASCAP composer. His instructional video series, String Clinics to Go, has reached thousands of teachers, while his works receive regular performance at the prestigious Midwest Clinic.
Over 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a string program of more than 700 students that became a national model for excellence in both classical and eclectic music. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which under his direction achieved international prominence through over 80 annual performances, multiple White House appearances, and performances at the Midwest Clinic. Phillips has also served as assistant music director and arranger for the professional ensemble Barrage 8 and conducted extensively with youth symphonies, all-state orchestras, and prestigious camps including those at Interlochen and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He held the position of resident conductor and arranger for Seattle's Wintergrass Festival for 12 years.

He serves as Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments and holds the distinction of being Professor Emeritus of Music at Hofstra University. His influence extends far beyond his institutional roles through "Boonshaft's Blog," a weekly publication that continues to guide and inspire music educators nationwide.
His leadership has earned him remarkable recognition throughout his career. Boonshaft received the inaugural George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education and Music For All. He holds membership in both Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi honor societies and has been selected three times as a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence." His other accolades include the University of Hartford's Outstanding Music Educator Award (received twice), the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International, and honorary life memberships in the Tri-M Music Honor Society (three times). He has also been recognized with official proclamations from five state governors and a Certificate of Appreciation from President Ronald Reagan.
Beyond his academic work, Boonshaft has conducted and spoken throughout all fifty states and internationally, performing for presidents and world leaders including George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Margaret Thatcher. He previously taught at Moravian College and the University of Hartford. His formal training includes a Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude), a Master of Music Education in Conducting, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, along with a Certificate from the Kodály Musical Training Institute, which he studied through a Connecticut General Fellowship.
