About the Authors
Bob Phillips, born in 1953, stands out as a leading voice in string education through his work as an author, composer, conductor, and teacher trainer. He has built his reputation on innovative approaches to large group pedagogy and on expanding the stylistic range available to string musicians through eclectic music.
Phillips has authored more than 25 book series for classroom use, including all six levels of Sound Innovations and pioneering eclectic styles collections such as Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song. Over 200 of his orchestral and band compositions have been published, and he is an award-winning ASCAP composer whose works are frequently performed at the Midwest Clinic. His instructional DVD series, String Clinics to Go, has found its way into thousands of music classrooms.
During his 27 years directing strings in Saline, Michigan, Phillips developed a program of over 700 students recognized nationally for excellence in both classical and eclectic music. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which gained international prominence under his direction while performing more than 80 shows annually and appearing at the White House and the Midwest Clinic. Phillips has conducted extensively, serving as assistant music director and arranger for the professional ensemble Barrage 8 and conducting youth orchestras, all-state honors ensembles, and camps including Interlochen, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and multiple state orchestras. He spent 12 years as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle.

He holds memberships in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi honor societies and has received the University of Hartford's Regent's Award twice, along with that institution's Outstanding Music Educator Award. Additional honors include three selections as a National Endowment for the Arts Artist in Residence, three Honorary Life Memberships in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International. His accomplishments have been recognized by five state governors through official proclamations, and he has performed for multiple U.S. presidents and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom.
