Bob Phillips, born in 1953, is an accomplished composer, author, conductor, and educator who has fundamentally shaped string education through innovative pedagogy. Recognized as a leading figure in large group instruction and eclectic string styles, his instructional materials and compositions reach thousands of student musicians annually across classrooms nationwide.
His prolific output includes over 25 book series for educational settings, notably the complete Sound Innovations curriculum and pioneering style-based collections such as Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song. Phillips has published more than 200 compositions for orchestras and bands and holds recognition as an award-winning ASCAP composer. His works regularly appear on Midwest Clinic performance programs, while his instructional DVDs, String Clinics to Go, have become teaching tools in schools across the country.
Over 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a string program exceeding 700 students that became nationally recognized for excellence in both classical and contemporary music. He founded and directed the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, a folk-fiddling ensemble that achieved international prominence through performances at prestigious venues including the White House and annual engagements exceeding 80 shows. Phillips has conducted extensively with youth symphonies, all-state orchestras, and music camps nationwide and served as resident conductor and arranger for Seattle's Wintergrass Festival for 12 years.

He serves as Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments and is Professor Emeritus of Music at Hofstra University, where he was selected for the Center for Scholarly Research and Academic Excellence. His weekly blog reaches music educators across the country, continuing to shape the profession through thoughtful commentary and inspiration.
Throughout his career, Dr. Boonshaft has earned widespread recognition for his contributions to music education. He received the inaugural George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education and Music For All. Additional honors include three selections as a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence," the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International, and honorary life memberships in the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He has also earned proclamations from five state governors and a Certificate of Appreciation from President Ronald Reagan.
