About the Authors
Born in 1953, Bob Phillips is an author, composer, pedagogue, and conductor recognized as a transformative figure in string education. His innovative approach to large group pedagogy and eclectic string styles has shaped music instruction across the country. Thousands of string students perform his works in classrooms annually, and his pedagogical influence extends through teacher training and educational leadership.
Phillips has authored more than 25 book series for classroom instruction, including the complete Sound Innovations series and six groundbreaking eclectic publications: Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song. He has over 200 published compositions for orchestras and bands and is an award-winning ASCAP composer whose works are regularly featured at the Midwest Clinic. His instructional DVDs, String Clinics to Go, have become standard resources for music teachers nationwide.
For 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a nationally recognized string program serving over 700 students in both classical and eclectic music styles. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, an ensemble that performed internationally with an average of 80 shows annually, including multiple performances at the White House and the Midwest Clinic. As a guest conductor, Phillips has worked with youth symphonies and all-state orchestras across the country, including programs in Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, California, Tennessee, and the Queensland Honour Ensemble Program. He served as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle for 12 years and worked as assistant music director and arranger for the professional string ensemble Barrage 8.

He has been selected three times as a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence" and has received the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from the Women Band Directors International. Additional recognitions include membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi honor societies, the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the University of Hartford, and three honorary life memberships in the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Before his current role, he taught at Moravian College and the University of Hartford, and he founded both the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.
