About the Authors
Bob Phillips, born in 1953, combines composition, conducting, and teaching to influence string music education at all levels. He has developed over 25 instructional book series, with the Sound Innovations curriculum serving as his flagship work. Phillips has also created five genre-specific publications including Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, and Latin Philharmonic, each designed to help students engage with diverse musical styles on string instruments.
His compositional output exceeds 200 works for orchestras and bands, many of which have been performed at prestigious venues like the Midwest Clinic. As an ASCAP award-winning composer, Phillips has extended his educational reach through String Clinics to Go, a series of instructional DVDs widely used in schools across the nation.
During his 27-year tenure building the string program in Saline, Michigan, Phillips grew the enrollment to over 700 students exploring both classical and eclectic genres. He founded and directed the internationally acclaimed Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, a folk ensemble that performed more than 80 shows annually and appeared multiple times at the White House. Phillips has conducted youth orchestras throughout the country, including honors ensembles in Michigan, California, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina, while also serving as resident conductor and arranger for Seattle's Wintergrass Festival for 12 years.

Peter Loel Boonshaft stands out as a leading figure in music education today. He currently serves as Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments while maintaining a strong online presence through his widely followed blog that assists music teachers across the nation. His workshops and conducting have taken him throughout the United States and abroad, earning him recognition as the inaugural recipient of the George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education and Music For All.
His accomplishments span performance, academia, and professional recognition. Boonshaft holds a Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude), Master of Music Education in Conducting, and Doctor of Musical Arts, along with certification from the Kodály Musical Training Institute. As Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Hartford, he received the Regent's Award twice and the Outstanding Music Educator Award. Additional honors include three National Endowment for the Arts Artist in Residence appointments, three Honorary Life Memberships in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International. He has performed for three U.S. Presidents and received official recognition including a Certificate of Appreciation from former President Ronald Reagan.
